BACK TO SCHOOL HELLA EPIC SKATEBOARDING EVENT - On Sunday September 20, 2009 the Virginia Avenue Project will be collaborating with Hella Epic, to produce their Back to School Skateboarding Event! At fifteen, Casper Stockwell, an avid skateboarder, decided that he wanted to help kids less fortunate than himself. From traveling the world with his father, John Stockwell, Hollywood filmmaker, Casper soon learned that not all children had access to skateboarding. He was determined to do something about this and with the help of his family and friends he started Hella Epic. Since its inception, Hella Epic has donated hundreds of skateboards and skateboarding equipment to underserved children. On September 20, 2009, Hella Epic has invited kids from the Virginia Avenue Project and the Santa Monica Police Activities League to attend their next event. The event will include a skateboard clinic that will teach kids skateboarding tricks and discuss safety measures as well as give participants skateboards. Live music, food and many surprises are planned for the day. The Virginia Avenue Project has been providing long-term performing arts mentoring to underserved children for seventeen years. VAP uses the arts to help children think creatively and critically about their lives. The Back to School Skateboarding event is scheduled for Sunday September 20, 2009 at the Santa Monica Boys and Girls Club. TONY HAWK

TONY HAWK FOUNDATION NEWS - Since its inception in 2002, the Tony Hawk Foundation has awarded $3-million in grants to help create 450 public skateparks in almost every state across the U.S. These skateparks collectively amount to $180-million in community improvements, and many of them would not have happened if not for THF's financial and technical assistance. The Tony Hawk Foundation is the only national organization focused solely on empowering at-risk youth and improving disadvantaged communities through the development and financing of free, quality, public skateparks across the U.S. The following is a brief update detailing what your dollars and time have achieved in the past year. Since spring of 2008, THF has awarded 49 grants worth $415,000 for the construction of public skateparks in low-income communities. Pawhuska, Oklahoma earned $25,000, one of the top grants awarded for its skatepark that will draw visitors from the local Osage Nation Native American and other non-Native communities. Our pledge drives at our annual Stand Up For Skateparks benefits raised $53,000 for the Manhattan Bridge Skatepark in New York City, which installed its new skateable sculpture garden in June, and $78,000 for a skatepark project in the military community of Tierrasanta in San Diego, which thanks to Tony's endorsement and your contributions has become a priority project for the City Council. Updates include news about the Tony Hawk Experience at tonyhawkexperience.com. New Tony Hawk Foundation Board Members include Lhotse Hawk, Jamie Thomas, Bob Kahan and Gerard Cappello. For anyone needing information on getting a public skatepark in your town, go to www.publicskateparkguide.org. Stand Up For Skateparks Benefit - This year please SAVE-THE-DATE for the 6th-annual Tony Hawk RIDE Presents Stand Up For Skateparks event in Beverly Hills on October 11 at Ron Burkle's Green Acres, and due to popular demand we are launching this benefit in Las Vegas on November 7 at the Wynn Las Vegas resort. Tony Hawk RIDE Presents Stand Up For Skateparks is a family-centric action-sports carnival, featuring a Vert Skateboarding and BMX demo with Tony Hawk and other top pro athletes, interactive games, activities, music, and our live and silent auctions--all to support the creation of public skateparks for youth in low-income communities. We hope you will join us for one or both of these unique, family friendly events! http://tonyhawkfoundation.org

PERE UBU NEWS - New Pere Ubu Studio Album, Long Live Pere Ubu!, Available Digitally At hearpen.com September 15th, 2009. The album will be released on CD in the rest of the world by British label, Cooking Vinyl, on September 16th, 2009. Pere Ubu's online-only record store, hearpen.com, is administered by Smog Veil Records. The album was inspired by the proto-Absurdist stage play that gave the band its name - Alfred Jarry's 'Ubu Roi' (King Ubu). The play's premiere in Paris in 1896 provoked riots in the theatre and a national scandal. The story is a vicious and satiric re-telling of Shakespeare's 'Macbeth.' David Thomas, Pere Ubu founder and front man explains 'one early goal, during the course of writing the album, which began in the summer of 2007, was to approach the space between songs in a new way. We began using connective dialog and ambient noise to bridge that space in a thematic way.' Initially David Thomas was determined to sing the parts of all the characters himself in various voices. This led directly to the notion of a live 'radio play' that would compliment the band's concert set. With the encouragement of Glenn Max, musical director of London's Southbank Centre, the album begat the theatrical production titled, 'Bring Me The Head Of Ubu Roi.' The latter premiered over two days at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, April 25 and 26, 2008. Sarah Jane Morris (ex-Communards, Happy End) was recruited to sing the role of Mere Ubu. Pere Ubu's soundman, Gagarin, an ambient electronica recording artist, guests on the album and subsequently joined the band on stage. The stage production has the band members playing supporting roles and performing dance routines. Pere Ubu is David Thomas on vocals; Sarah Jane Morris on vocals; Keith Moline on guitar; Robert Wheeler on EML synthesizer, theremin; Michele Temple on bass; Steve Mehlman on drums; Gagrin on electronica. Visit Pere Ubu online at ubuprojex.net and the labels online at hearpen.com and SmogVeil.com

Exhibit runs from June 12, 2009-September 13, 2009 at NMAI on the National Mall, Washington, DC. Ramp it Up celebrates the vibrancy, creativity, and controversy of American Indian skate culture. SURF NEWS

2010 WORLD JUNIOR SURFING CHAMPIONSHIP will be held in New Zealand, one of the World's most unique surfing destinations. The Junior Champs will be held at Piha beach, a beautiful black sand beach famous for its large waves, just 45 minutes drive from downtown Auckland. The event will begin on January 20, 2010, at the peak of the Kiwi summer. New Zealand is one of the world's most rewarding surfing spots with quality waves, plenty of choice and relatively few surfers. The main source of swell for both the North and South Islands is from the low pressure systems of the roaring forties, but New Zealand is fortunate to pick up swell from just about anywhere. For those used to fighting for a beach park and some room in the line up, surfing in New Zealand offers a very different experience. Parking is mostly free and being a country of only 4 million people there is plenty of room to catch the perfect wave. For those looking for an adventure, the best surf spots can be found off the beaten track.

MSA CLASSIC SURF CONTEST - The Malibu Surfing Association's MSA Classic surfing contest will be held September 12-13, 2009 at First Point, Surfrider Beach, Malibu. We expect the MSA Classic - California's premier club surfing competition - to turn out another great group of celebrities, Malibu residents, surfing legends, and up-and-coming greats; all against the backdrop of one of the world's most famous beaches and within the heart of the LA media market. Your tax-deductible contribution to the MSA Classic offers excellent exposure to both contestants and visitors. We offer a compelling suite of pre-event, on-site, post-event, and year-round values, including prominent recognition in the official program. The MSA is an all volunteer, 501 (c) (3) organization dedicated to the fellowship of surfing and to the stewardship of Surfrider Beach. We believe that Malibu is one of surfing's crown jewels and a special resource for all its visitors. With this belief, we're actively engaged in improving the Surfrider Beach experience, whether on the beach or in the water. We're Califorina's ONLY surfing club whose fundraising efforts go directly back into preserving the beach we love -- Surfrider Beach. On behalf of the members and Directors of the MSA, thank you for your time and consideration. www.msaclassic.com and www.msasurfing.org
