SKATEPARK PAVILION - During their fifth year as undergraduate architecture students in Virginia Tech's School of Architecture + Design, Jeff Franklin and Miron Nawratil designed and built a pavilion for the Town of Blacksburg's new skate park at 615 Patrick Henry Drive last spring. Franklin and Nawratil worked in conjunction with the town and Dean Crane, director of parks and recreation, to create the pavilion. The grand opening of the skate park was held on Aug. 25. Funding for the pavilion has been made possible by contributions from individuals and companies throughout the nation, the Town of Blacksburg and the School of Architecture + Design. NIKE VIDEO PREMIERE - Nike Skateboarding to Release First Film Nothing But the Truth - Three years in the making, Nothing But the Truth is the story of the Nike SB team, on and off their skateboards. Filmed on location in the Santa Clarita Valley of Southern California and set to an original soundtrack composed by Mark Mothersbaugh, professional skateboarders Paul Rodriguez, Brian Anderson, Gino Iannucci, Stefan Janoski, Omar Salazar, Chet Childress, Reese Forbes, Todd Jordan, Daniel Shimizu, Danny Supa, Wieger Van Wageningen, Lance Mountain and amateurs Grant Taylor, Lewis Marnell, Dan Murphy and Clark Hassler teamed up with the Belgian director duo Lionel Goldstein to tell the whole truth and Nothing But the Truth. The team was given carte blanche to pitch their story. In the story line the skaters would write and direct a film about a “truth” in their lives. What unfolded can be left to interpretation, but has been described by Daniel Shimizu as “Awkward and kinda scary.” Whether it’s Todd Jordan’s attempt at making a “film about women and me” or Omar Salazar’s tragic vomiting story, you will be sure to see a new side to the Nike SB team. Scheduled for release to authorized Nike SB dealers on October 27, 2007 and for general release on November 23, Nothing But the Truth, Nike SB’s first full length film will premier in Los Angeles on October 2 at the Kodak Theater with a world tour to follow. Since 2002, the Tony Hawk Foundation has awarded over $1.7-million to 336 communities for the construction of public skateparks. Over 200 of these parks are currently open and serving more than 1.8-million youth annually. Tony Hawk Foundation grants are offered to qualifying municipalities and registered nonprofit groups for the construction of free, public skateparks. Awards range from $1,000 to $25,000, and are based on a one-time, single-year award. The Foundation does not provide sustaining funds or multi-year grants. Grant applications are completed online, and may be submitted through October 1, 2007. Grant awards will be announced in December. Since August, Sergie has been on a road trip with Rune, Cardone, Greek, and the Dagger Crew. They met up with Omar Hassan in Portland for the Oregon Trifecta. Rune was doing his video part for Flip and Sergie was along for his first Trifecta. Sergie didn't enter the first stop because of a bruised heal, and saved himself for the next stop at Pier Park, and got 2nd. Sergie ended up getting an invite to the Mexico X Games for his first vert contest in several years. Sergie ended up qualifying 9th going into the finals, but had to pull out due to an MCL injury. The Type S riders have been killing it this year. Digo Menezes got 2nd at the LG comp in San Diego. Sandro got 3rd at the Mexico X-Games. Sergie is getting ready for GVR contest. Lincoln and the rest of the street and vert crew have two more stops in the Dew tour and most are ranked in the top ten.
