RISE ABOVE AND NEVER FORGET - Jan 10-March 1. One-Up Creative Space at Podium/Ross Powers Pro Shop is presenting 'Rise Above and Never Forget' featuring the Art and Propaganda of Wounded Knee Skateboards on Saturday, Jan. 10, with an opening reception from 3pm-6pm. 'One-Up Creative Space is dedicated to showing the work of people who are stepping up and doing what they believe in,' said One Up director Brandon Smith. Smith said that Wounded Knee skateboards were selected for their radical style and inspiring message to youth. 'We believe that creativity and community can make a difference in the world,' Smith said. 'Pursuing your passion can lead to great things.' Wounded Knee Skateboards was created to educate skateboarding youth around the country about the true history of Wounded Knee and Native American history and to help Native American at risk youth from drug and alcohol abuse, according to founder Jim Murphy. A major portion of proceeds from purchases from Wounded Knee goes towards this goal. In its brief history, skateboarding has been greeted with skepticism and labeled as an outcast form of youth rebellion. 'In reality, skateboarding is a great freedom of expression,' Murphy added. 'We are not here to solely make skateboards, but to remind our country of those whose land we now reside,' Murphy said. 'The more boards, shirts and hats I sell, the more I can give away to the at-risk youth on reservations in need of quality skateboards and clothing they cannot afford.' 'One Up Creative Space is proud and excited to host Wounded Knee Skateboards and their art,' said Nick Pedemonti who co-owns Podium with Ross Powers. 'Rise Above and Never Forget' will be on display until March 1. Podium Pro Shop is located at 5081 Main Street in Manchester, Vermont. Please call for more information 802-367-2669.

TONY HAWK FOUNDATION NEWS - The Public Skatepark Development Guide, the indispensable handbook for public-skatepark advocates, is now available in an updated and improved second edition. First published in 2007 by the Tony Hawk Foundation, Skaters For Public Skateparks, and the International Association of Skateboard Companies, the ultimate guide for community-skatepark advocates was available for free, and supplies quickly disappeared. The new 128-page second edition features updated information and expanded chapters, including skatepark vision, advocacy, fundraising, design, and management, plus several supplements and visual aids. Author Peter Whitley revisited the material and compiled updates from dozens of experienced skatepark advocates around the country to make the Public Skatepark Development Guide second edition even more informative and helpful than the original version. At its meeting in December, the Tony Hawk Foundation Board of Directors voted to fund the printing of the second edition so that this valuable resource could once again be made available to the public for only the cost of shipping. To order the book, visit publicskateparkguide.org. The Tony Hawk Foundation's Spring 2009 grant season is officially underway, and the grant application can be accessed via the Foundation's Web site. The deadline for completing Tony Hawk Foundation Skatepark Grant applications for the current season is March 2, 2009. Details are available at tonyhawkfoundation.org.

NIKE NEWS - Since both Lance Mountain and Craig Stecyk are big fans of the Blazer and since they have a history of working together, Nike figured it couldn't hurt to see if they wanted to collaborate again. But asking them to simply color up a shoe would be a doing a disservice to the skaters of the world. What started with a simple conversation over a year ago between old friends grew into a project that includes some of Craig's original artwork, a zine, a short film and of course the actual footwear and apparel that they worked on. As fans of both Lance and Craig, we hope that all of you enjoy the outcome as much as we do. http://www.nikeskateboarding.com/lanceandstecyk HIGHVALLEY SKATEPARK NEWS - Highvalley Skatepark is going to be built in 2009 and ready to shred for 2010. SKATEPARKS IN SAN DIEGO, CA - Due to the falling economy a majority of San Diego's public pay-to-play skateparks have been met with budget cuts in 2009. As a result, these parks no longer continue to employ pad nannies. Now all the pay-to-play city skateparks in San Diego will be unmonitored, and therefore, free. This all came about, naturally, due to budget cuts. Parks include Carmel Valley Skatepark in Del Mar, Rancho Penasquitos Skate Park, Bill and Maxine Wilson Skate Park, the Charles L. Lewis III Memorial Skate Park and Robb Field (A.K.A. 'OB Skatepark'). The Mission Valley Y.M.C.A. is not a city park, and therefore won't be free. All helmet/pad laws are still in effect, but there won't be any Pad Nannies to enforce. KCDC NEWS - David Foote, a New York City based artist, filmmaker, and entrepreneur has recently designed a limited edition skateboard for KCDC. With a portion of proceeds benefiting St. Jude's Children's Hospital, the skateboard, priced at $75 will be one of ten lifestyle products sold from February - April 2009 at BoConcept, New York's bastion of Danish modern home design and on www.DavidFooteStudio.com. SLO SKATEPARK NEWS - If you could please take a few minutes to send an email to the SLO City Council at slocitycouncil@slocity.org telling them why they should continue to fully support the skatepark project, it would go along way to increase chances of getting it built sooner rather than later. A few talking points could be:1. SLO would benefit as a community and would be a better place with the new skatepark than without. 2. The new park would be a center that would bring the community and families together (i.e. Los Osos). 3. It fills a critical recreational need that is long overdue for a wide cross-section of the community. 4. For those of you from out of the area, SLO would become a destination that you would now come to instead of other places. City Councils like to hear how you and your family would spend your money in local motels, restaurants, stores, etc. Please get everyone that is sympathetic to this cause to also send an email. If you can attend the meeting, even better but please send the email regardless. Every email sent and person that attends the meetings matter. Here's the meeting info. Hope you can make it. Spread the word! January 15, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. Community Forum Ludwick Community Center, 864 Santa Rosa Street, January 20, 2009 at 4 p.m. City Council Meeting City Hall, 990 Palm Street. RECOMMENDED BOOK - 'FREZNO' by Tony Stamolis - 'Though it once held the promise of the California dream, inspiring the likes of Steinbeck and Saroyan, Fresno is now the butt of a thousand late-night TV jokes; it consistently comes in next to dead last in surveys of cities with a high quality of life. This central California teenage wasteland ishome to lowriders, emptybuildings, dope drops, and one of the highest violent-crime rates in the country. It is also the birthplace of photographerTony Stamolis, who spent six years chronicling his strange hometown. The result: a disturbing, humorous, and poignant insider's view of a post-suburban American badlands.' http://processmediainc.com/titles/art_and_culture/frezno.php.
