JUICE MAGAZINE NEWS - MARCH 15-31, 2004

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Deckarama: Skateboard Art Exhibition - Fremont, California -Reception and Lecture - March 31, 2004 - at The Louie-Meager Art Gallery. The art of the skateboard deck exhibit runs March 3-April 11, 2004. The skateboard subculture generates a brash-new-urban folk art with a history stemming from graphic design, underground art and appropriated commercial pop icons. The Louie-Meager Art Gallery is currently displaying a chronology of skateboard decks dating from the 1950's to the present day. The era of the 1980's is highlighted through the works and collection of Jim and Jimbo Phillips, as well as other collections representing various eras concerning different styles of art and illustration. Artist from around the nation and locally have also been chosen to display their art and skateboard decks, truly making this an admirable event. In addition, The Gallery will be hosting a reception on Wednesday, March 31st, 2004 from the hours of 6:30pm to 8:45pm. Jim and Jimbo Phillips will be highlighting the evening as guest speakers to discuss art, art techniques, skateboarding and its respective industry. A question and answer period will conclude Jim and Jimbo Phillips panel. A free raffle will be held which will include skateboards, t-shirts, stickers and various related merchandise. The exhibition is currently open for viewing Monday through Friday from 12pm to 3pm; Wednesday evening by appointment, and during most Smith Center events. Admission is Free. The curators for the Deckarama Exhibition are Orlando Lacro and Louis Lima. They are both from the Bay Area being directly impacted by skateboarding at early ages. Their goal is to inform the general public about the art of the skateboard deck and to educate through an artistic perspective. For information: www.ohlone.cc.ca.us/org.
PRESS RELEASE - 'RIDING GIANTS' is the exciting new documentary from Stacy Peralta (Dogtown and Z-Boys) that honors the history of big wave surfing and traces its origins back over 1500 years to present day, celebrating and deifying the legends that made the subculture into an international sport. RIDING GIANTS recently premiered as the opening night film for the 2004 Sundance Film Festival. There is no way to tell the story of big wave riding without tracing the history of surfing itself, a history that goes back much further than the Beach Boys and 'Surfin' U.S.A.' The film begins with surfing's early Polynesian roots to its rebirth in the early 20th century and the subculture that followed in the late 1940s. A new ideal was created at that time, a hybrid of Polynesian waterman and American frontiersman, from which a spirit of romantic bohemianism that is the mainstay of modern surfing lifestyle was born. In the film, we meet Greg 'Da Bull' Noll, pioneering rider whose unrelenting determination to surf Hawaii's 'unridden realm' in the late 1950s and 1960s earned him his nickname; Jeff Clark, Northern California's lone frontiersman who, after discovering the massive waves of Maverick's near San Francisco, rode there alone for over a decade; and Hawaii's Laird Hamilton, the prototypical 'extreme' surfer, a rare breed of athlete/innovator considered the best big wave rider who ever waxed a board. RIDING GIANTS is the story of these original big wave riders and the countless others who have followed in their waves and chased their dreams out into the blue water, riding 50 foot, 60 foot and even 70 foot waves in a manner once considered the realm of fantasy. Experience the breathless moments of quiet grace that these extraordinary adventurers believe are achievable within the violent world. Directed by Stacy Peralta and written by Stacy Peralta and Sam George. Produced by Agi Orsi, Stacy Peralta and Jane Kachmer; with Executive Producers Nathalie Delest, Franck Marty and Laird Hamilton. The film reunites Peralta with Editor Paul Crowder, Director of Photography Peter Pilafian and Producer Agi Orsi, who worked with Peralta on DOGTOWN AND THE Z-BOYS.

His email address is walterd@ncleg.net. Write him a letter expressing your thoughts and ask for an amendment to the law. Make your voice heard. Fight for an amendment to the full pads law. Speak up.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Quiksilver, Inc. Set to Acquire DC Shoes, Inc.... Quiksilver, Inc. (NYSE: ZQK) and DC Shoes, Inc. announced a definitive agreement whereby Quiksilver will acquire DC Shoes, the premier designer, producer and distributor of action sports inspired footwear, apparel and related accessories in the U.S. and internationally. Quiksilver, Inc.'s surf-inspired Quiksilver and Roxy brands will be complemented by the DC Shoes brand with its skate-driven lifestyle. The combined businesses are perfectly positioned in the global youth market. DC Shoes, Inc. achieved total sales exceeding $100 million in the year ended December 31, 2003. Its broad product line includes a full range of skate shoes and snowboard boots with various technical and design features, as well as men's and junior's apparel and accessories. Quiksilver, Inc. reported revenues of $975 million for its fiscal year ended October 31, 2003. Robert B. McKnight, Jr., Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Quiksilver, Inc., commented, 'DC shoes is a tremendous fit with our organization from a cultural, strategic and operational standpoint. They are a young, aggressive and energetic company which reminds me a lot of Quiksilver. We both share respect for the authenticity that makes our brands powerful, and we both benefit from product design that reflects technical excellence and great style. We expect to see tremendous synergies between our teams.' Bernard Mariette, President of Quiksilver, Inc., commented, 'DC Shoes fits all of the criteria we identify as key for an acquisition. DC has fantastic global potential, sizeable revenues, and their culture is very similar to Quiksilver's. In fact, they have already demonstrated international success, and we can build on this with our global platform that has been developed over the past ten years. We expect DC to flourish with its separate design and marketing teams supported by the logistics of Quiksilver. While we have successfully developed a growing branded footwear business, DC's management team will help fine tune our footwear operations and product. At the same time, we believe that DC has an excellent, but so far, relatively untapped opportunity, to deliver an even stronger sportswear line to the youth market.' Headquartered in Vista, California, privately-held DC Shoes, Inc. commands a leadership position in the action sports industry as the premier designer, producer and distributor of skate-inspired shoes, apparel and related accessories. DC's brand transcends the traditional boundaries of both footwear and skateboarding, with a diverse product mix respected by boardriders as well as a broad base of consumers. As one of the cornerstones of its marketing strategy, the company has built a world-class team of professional athletes that exemplify and enhance DC's brand, develop its signature products, and support its promotional efforts. Ken Block, President and Founder of DC Shoes, Inc., said, 'We are very excited to be partnering with Quiksilver, the number-one action sports brand in the industry. Their global platform will provide us with the resources to make DC even stronger, while allowing us to maintain the integrity and spirit of DC's roots.' Damon Way, Executive Vice President and Founder of DC Shoes, Inc., added, 'Quiksilver is the ideal partner for us. Their understanding of our vision as it relates to product development, marketing, distribution, global strategies and athletes could not be any better.' Mr. McKnight concluded, 'We believe this deal represents yet another step in the evolution of our business and that our shareholders will be well served through this transaction. It fits incredibly well with our strategy of pursuing opportunities in the global youth market. We are thrilled to expand both the depth and breadth of our management team and portfolio of brands, and we remain highly focused on our goal of building one of the world's leading branded consumer apparel, and now footwear, companies.' The total purchase price for the acquisition will consist of an initial payment of $56 million in cash and 1.6 million restricted shares of Quiksilver common stock and the assumption of approximately $10 million in funded indebtedness. In addition, the sellers may receive up to an additional $57 million paid over 4 years through 2007 if DC Shoes reaches certain performance targets. Quiksilver designs, produces and distributes clothing, accessories and related products for youngminded people and develops brands that represent a casual lifestyle - driven from a boardriding heritage. Quiksilver's authenticity is evident in its innovative products, events and retail environments across the globe. Quiksilver's primary focus is apparel for young men and young women under the Quiksilver, Roxy, Raisins, and Radio Fiji labels. Quiksilver also manufactures apparel for boys (Quiksilver Boys and Hawk Clothing), girls (Roxy Girl, Teenie Wahine and Raisins Girls), men (Quiksilveredition and Fidra) and women (Leilani swimwear), as well as snowboards, snowboard boots and bindings under the Lib Technologies, Gnu and Bent Metal labels. For Immediate Release: JELLO BIAFRA APOLOGIZES TO FANS FOR LATEST DEAD KENNEDYS 'DEAF CLUB' FIASCO - 'I am sorry I have to be the whistle blower yet again. I am deeply embarrassed by the poor quality of their new 'Live at the Deaf Club' CD. It could have been a good album. But in my opinion the sound quality and remix are so lame it's not even as good as the versions on 'Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death.' And those mixes are almost 20 years old. If they really 'spent the better part of a year' on this, I wonder what they were really doing most of the time. I don't think the artwork is as boring as 'Mutiny on the Bay,' but it doesn't really rock my world either. To me it's a dumbed-down version of the good stuff Winston Smith and I made, but now it seems deliberately designed not to offend anyone. Sad. I relayed my concerns to East Bay Ray, but as usual I never heard back. I have also been confronted several times at shows by people feeling ripped off by the 'Making of In God We Trust Inc.' DVD. They said they felt especially burned by only 22 minutes of content, and that the karaoke section was as stupid as the elves (yes, elves) on the cover. Please, folks, I had nothing to do with this! Like the fake Dead Kennedys 'reunion' tours, I did not authorize either of these projects and was not allowed any meaningful input at all. I can't double-check the 22 minutes or whatever because I am not allowed to possess the MVD releases unless I buy them from a store. I have never received copies, or even a contract, from Ray and Co. at all. Nor am I allowed to see all the books. In 1998 the other ex-Dead Kennedy's filed a vicious lawsuit against me stemming from a dispute that got ugly when I opposed putting 'Holiday in Cambodia' in a Levi's Dockers TV commercial. Unfortunately, their lawsuit is still going on. I maintain my innocence, and am sickened by what they have done to exploit Dead Kennedys once - good name and legacy since. I would like to go into much deeper detail about all this, but our attorneys have asked me not to. Let's just say it is far from over, uglier than ever, with no end in sight. So please be aware of the mentality behind all current Dead Kennedys releases, and where the money is really going. If anyone wishes to help in any way, please support the Alternative Tentacles Legal Defense Fund: Alternative Tentacles Legal Defense Fund P.O. Box 419092 San Francisco, CA 94141. On the Internet: www.alternativetentacles.com. Any and all help is very deeply appreciated. Lick Bush in '04.' - Jello Biafra

NEWS FROM - SKATEBOARDERS AGAINST DRUGS - MISSION STATEMENT - 'SkateBoarders Against Drugs' is an exciting, innovative public service whose time has arrived and frankly, we're surprised no one thought of it sooner. The main focus will be a series of 'Drug Awareness' skateboarding demonstrations at elementary schools here in Los Angeles and in the surrounding cities. Our Mission is to put on a spectacular show that will impact the lives of children. We have united the alcohol and drug free members of the Southern California skateboarding community in support of this cause. A team of notable skateboarders has been carefully selected to perform in these events. The video to the left was shot at the first event held on October 29, 2003, at Pine Crest Elementary School in Woodland Hills, CA. Unfortunately the rental equipment that was used cost the school $1400 dollars. With additional expenses the total cost of the event was almost $2000 dollars! With the proper funding our organization can purchase the necessary equipment, cover all expenses and put these events on at no cost to the schools. Can you see how important your contribution would be? We preciously need your Corporate Sponsorship to make these events become a reality. We're also looking for Grants and Donations from Government Agencies, Foundations, Small Business's and the Private Sector. 'SKATEBOARDERS AGAINST DRUGS' will combine with other non profit organizations who will donate services and/or items such as T-shirts, stickers and posters to be given away to the kids. At each event we will talk to the kids about the hazards of drugs and alcohol-reminding them to stay in school in order to achieve their goals in life. We're searching for a benefactor with the same enthusiasm as us to serve our local communities by making these events HAPPEN! The Skateboarders Against Drugs Team is Rich Zuccarello, Chuck Wampler, Mike Reider, and Zack Grove. For more information contact 'SkateBoarders Against Drugs' at 310 574-4725. Thank you for Your Support. S.B.A.D President - Richard Zuccarello. Visit www.sbadrugs.com for details.

For immediate release: Quiksilver Pro presented by Boost Mobile (March 2-14) www.quiksilver.com - Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) www.aspworldtour.com - 2004 World Championship Tour (WCT) - Lowe Defeats Irons To Win Final - Friday, March 12, 2004 (Snapper Rocks, Gold Coast, Australia) Australian - Michael Lowe (Windang, NSW) today defeated the biggest names in surfing to win the Quiksilver Pro presented by Boost Mobile. The US$260,000 World Championship Tournament (WCT) resumed with round four and ran right through the business end of the draw, climaxing at the grand finale and crowning of the 2004 champion. Clean 4ft (1.3m) righthanders persisted throughout the day at Rainbow Bay, offering plenty of room for the world's best surfers to cut loose on. Conditions became more inconsistent during the higher tide, but this did little to slow down performances. Following an amazing day of surfing, in which world #8 Lowe accounted for six-time world champion Kelly Slater (FL, USA) in the quarterfinals and California Taylor Knox in the semis, the 26-year-old then faced reigning two-time world champion Andy Irons (Kauai, Haw). The goofy footer wasted little time in the 35-minute final, posting an 8.17 on his first ride and then snuck a great wave under his opponent's priority to earn a daunting 9.17 midway through and gain control. Having won his last WCT title two years ago in Fiji, the victory brings his overall tally to three, but more significantly sees him on top of the world ratings for the first time in his career. It also generated a cool US$30,000 in prizemoney. Irons had been the form surfer of the event, posting a 9.63 and then the tournaments only perfect 10-point ride in the quarterfinals. Against Lowe his ability was never in question, but unfortunately a lack of waves and wrong decision to allow his opponent to catch a good one proved costly. Nonetheless, the runner-up finish is the Kauaian's best ever season opener, and left him charged for the year ahead. Equal third today were Tom Whitaker (Bronte, Aus) and Knox. Both earned US$10,000 and are sitting pretty on the world ratings for at least the coming weeks. Knox, who finished last year rated 7th with three semifinal berths to his credit, appeared a dark horse leading into the final rounds. His match with Lowe proved extremely inconsistent however, and the pair sat waiting most the clash. Holding advantage with an eight in his tally, the Californian mistakenly allowed his opponent to catch a good wave near the end and there lost his chance of a finals berth. Finishing equal fifth in the Quiksilver Pro presented by Boost Mobile were Occhilupo, West Australian Jake Paterson, Slater, and Brazilian Victor Ribas. The Torquay Mineral Water 'Time Tunnel' award was won by Quiksilver Trials winner Shaun Gossmann (Gold Coast, Aus) for his amazing 13-second barrel in round one. The South African born surfer collected an additional AUD$5,000 pay packet. The Quiksilver Pro presented by Boost Mobile marked the first event on the 2004 Foster's ASP men's World Championship Tour (WCT). - Further information: www.quiksilver.com and www.aspworldtour.com

SEATTLE SKATEPARK NEWS - Over the last couple months you have seen us gathering steam using the locomotive called the Puget Sound Skatepark Association. In case you've been out of the loop, we are having a battle to save our lovely Ballard Bowl to a group of closed-minded individuals with private interests in pocket. The bowl itself takes only 3% of the overall new proposed civic park space, yet some folks wish to see the bowl, created with volunteer donations destroyed and replaced with a lackluster and quite expensive 'street feature'. You might of asked yourself, 'What can I do to help out?'.. well here is the chance. We need signed petitions from Seattle residents, King County residents and especially Ballard community residents. I urge you to take a moment and print out at least 5-10 copies of the attached flyer. Take them to your school, your church, your AA group, your skateshop or skatepark and get them filled out. Every one counts from little Timmys to your Grandparents and neighbors. We don't care if you only skate street, ditches or dead mules, the point is clear and our intentions are to create a well-connected network of skateboard parks catering to every aspect of the activity we call our own. Now is your time to be part of an unparalleled skateboard activism movement that will make history culminating in a skateboard rally march from Seattle Center's Seask8 park to City Hall on Saturday, May 15th (Which is also the bowls' 2 year anniversary). There we will present the petitions and have presentations for the City of Seattle to hear our collective voices. Please make plans to attend this event, as now is the time and saving our only park is the cause. We are looking for special guest speakers and sponsors to help our grass-roots cause. If you know of someone who can aid us, please forward this email to them with our gratitude. For more information please contact us at pssa@pugetsoundskateparks.org. Thank you - Jason Harrison - Founder - Puget Sound Skatepark Association - PO BOX 95922 Seattle, WA 98145 -www.pugetsoundskateparks.org
