CHAZ PINEDA

INTERVIEW AND INTRODUCTION BY JEFF HO

Chaz Pineda is the face of the future of skateboarding. With pure determination and Texan-bred skills, he’s on a mission to massacre coping everywhere he can find it. Make some room in the history books in the chapter with Trujillo. That’s how good he is. Chaz is grinding his way over the top and leading the new breed with daily devotion to conquering big transistions.

Chaz, tell us how old you are.
I'm 14 years old.

Where are you from?
I'm from Houston, Texas.

What inspired you to start skating?
My uncle skated. I surfed before I skated. Through my surfing, I got into skating.

When did you start surfing?
When I was four. I was in Hawaii for about nine months.

What island were you living on?
I was living on the Big Island.

Do you surf in Texas?
No, I don't really surf any more. I mostly skate. There are really no waves in Texas.

Right. Do you want to tell me about some of the companies that you're skating for?
I'm skating for Black Label, 88, Billabong and Grind King Trucks.

That's impressive. Are you into the pro contest scene yet?
Not yet. I'm going to wait a couple of years for that.

You're skating amateur contests right now?
Yeah, I'm doing pretty well in the AM contests.

What are some of your other hobbies?
I just skate every day.

What kind of music do you like?
I like AC/DC and Slayer.

Do you have any brothers and sisters?
I have a big brother named JP. He lives in Texas.

Are you the only one in your family besides your uncle that skates?
Yeah, I'm the only one.

They say you have an old school style.
Yeah, I've got a little bit of an old school style. I've been skating with a lot of the old Texas pros like Ken Phillion, Troy Chasen and Craig Johnson. I kind of have their style, except with new stuff.

Who do you skate with in California?
I've been out here staying with Devon Lamb at the Basic Bow. I've just been skating a lot down here.

Do you like skating pools and bowls more than street?
Yeah, I like the tranny stuff more. I like to skate pools and vert.

Do you skate a lot of half-pipes?
Yeah, I skate all that. I'll skate anything.
